Swimming Pool Construction Process

A domestic swimming pool is usually constructed from concrete, with a tiled or liner finish. The pool is typically rectangular, but can be any shape.

The first step is to excavate the site to the required depth, which is usually around 1.2m-1.5m. The area will need to be excavated a little larger than the finished depth and width of the pool to allow sufficient space for the concrete wall and frame.

Site Excavation

The next step is to build the walls, which are either made from concrete blocks or a steel-reinforced sprayed concrete shell.

Construction of pool base and walls

Once the walls are complete, the floor of the pool is poured. This is usually made from concrete, but could also be tiled.

The plant plant equipment (filter, pump and heater) needs to be installed and connected. If you don’t already have a suitable shed or outbuilding, we are happy to construct one for you. The noise from this equipment will be barely noticeable unless you are standing right next to it.

Pool filter and pump

An air source heat pump can be fitted out of sight

Once the floor has cured, the pool is filled with water and the plumbing is installed. The plumbing includes the main drain, skimmers, and return jets. Finally, the pool is finished with a tiled or liner surface. The pool is now ready to be used!

How long does it take to build a swimming pool?

It can take anywhere between 6 to 12 weeks to have a domestic swimming pool built in the UK.

This timeframe depends on a number of factors, such as the size and specifications of the pool and any additional landscaping work that may be required.

If you’re thinking of having a swimming pool installed in your garden for the summer, it’s a good idea to start planning the project early in the year. That way, you can be sure to have it ready in time to make the most of the warm weather.

What is the best time of year to install a pool?

While a pool can be installed any time of the year, there are some factors you may wish to consider when planning the start date of the project.

If you wish to start using a pool in the summer, it may be a good idea to start construction around February/March to allow enough time for the excavation, landscaping and construction work to be completed.

Constructing a swimming pool usually involves laying or spraying concrete for the pool walls and floor. Therefore, it is a good idea to avoid periods of heavy rain which might delay this process.

How long does it take to fill a swimming pool?

Domestic swimming pools are usually filled using 1-2 standard garden hoses. For a typical 8m x 4m pool this will take approximately 48 hours for the pool to be filled. It may also be possible to buy water which is delivered via a tanker lorry. The cost of water on a metred supply is approximately £400 to £600 for a standard-size domestic swimming pool.

How frequently do you need to fill a pool with water?

You will usually only fill your pool once after it has been installed. However, you may need to occasionally add a small amount of water using a garden hose to compensate for any water lost through evaporation and backwashing.

How long after you fill a pool can you swim?

Most people are eager to jump in and start swimming as soon as they fill their pool with water. However, it is generally advised to wait at least 24 hours before swimming in a pool that you have just filled. This gives the chemicals a chance to spread evenly and work properly. Additionally, the water will be colder immediately after filling, so it is best to wait a day or two to allow it to warm up.
